Packaging dielines: design a box that folds right

A great unboxing starts with a good dieline. Keep panels, folds, glue areas, and orientation working together.

Use the exact structural template

Packaging artwork must be built on the approved dieline for the selected box dimensions and material. A rectangular trim-and-bleed template does not describe a box structure. Request the correct dieline before beginning final artwork.

Understand the markings

Dielines can identify cut paths, folds, glue areas, and nonprinting regions. Preserve the structural geometry, follow the layer instructions, and avoid changing scale. Structural lines must be handled according to the production workflow rather than flattened into the design.

Check the assembled orientation

Artwork that looks upright on a flat file may appear upside down on an assembled flap. Review all visible panels, barcode orientation, legal text, and the interaction between neighboring surfaces.

Plan for assembly and fit

Product fit, packing clearance, material thickness, and assembly method matter as much as the graphics. Confirm the structure or physical prototype when dimensions are critical.
