Make the details stand out.

Give the finish its own file

Selected foil and spot-UV products require a separate finishing mask. The mask identifies where the treatment is applied and must align exactly with the print artwork. Supply one mask in the file role requested by the product.

Use a clear, high-contrast mask

Unless the production recipe specifies otherwise, the mask should use solid black for treated areas and white for untreated areas. Keep its dimensions and registration identical to the artwork. Avoid gradients, shadows, and grayscale effects in a binary finishing mask.

Design for the physical process

Fine lines, tiny gaps, dense small lettering, and finishing near cuts or folds can be unsuitable. Minimum line widths, spacing, coverage, and registration tolerances belong to the exact production process and must be confirmed by prepress.

Review artwork and mask together

Open both current files and compare placement before approval. A digital representation cannot show metallic reflectance, raised depth, or tactile feel accurately.
